British mezzo-soprano Anita Monserrat joins the Wiener Staatsoper Opernstudio for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons as the Hildegard Zadek Scholarship holder. Anita recently won First Prize and the Orchesterpreis der Deutschen Radio Philharmonie at the 2024 SWR Junge Opernstars competition, Second Prize at the 2024 Neue Stimmen competition and was a semifinalist at the 30th edition of Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition. Anita was a member of the Young Singer’s Project at the Salzburger Festspiele, performing in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, and also attended the 2024 International Meistersinger Akademie (IMA). Recent engagements include ‘Christmas in Vienna’ at the Wiener Konzerthaus, performing alongside Joyce DiDonato and Lawrence Brownlee, and covering the role of Ino in the Lille Opera House production of Semele, under the direction of Emmanuelle Haïm. In the UK, Anita was a finalist in both the 2023 Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the 2022 Handel Singing Competition.

In concert, Anita is equally in demand, appearing as a soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Hans Graf, and Bach’s St John Passion at London’s Barbican Centre with Britten Sinfonia. Other concert highlights include Handel’s Messiah with Laurence Cummings and the London Handel Festival, soloist for ‘Easter at King’s’ as seen on BBC2, Bach’s St John Passion with Philippe Herreweghe, Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Academy of Ancient Music and soloist for the Royal Academy of Music’s Manson Ensemble with Jessica Cottis. Anita has participated in many public masterclasses with artists such as KS Neil Shicoff, Malcolm Martineau, Catherine Wyn-Rogers and Mary Bevan.

Prior to joining the Opernstudio, Anita studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with KS Michael Schade and Laura Aikin. Whilst at the MdW, Anita’s roles included ‘Hänsel’ in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and the principal role in Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine. Anita began singing as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral and went on to hold a choral scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, where she read music. She then studied at the Royal Academy of Music, under the tutelage of Alex Ashworth and Catherine Wyn-Rogers. Anita is represented by Askonas Holt.
